When we first met Sean and his family (younger brother Ryan along with Mom and Dad, Suzanne and Jim), it was evident that this shy, quiet little boy had a BIG thing for Star Wars – the neon light sabers that he and his brother carried around were our first clue that he was a definite fan.
Over the course of a few family visits, we learned that Sean had been born with a heart condition that would require transplant surgery. And through the selfless miracle of organ donation, it didn’t take long before he had a new heart and was on the slow, sometimes frightening road to recovery. That was almost 5 years ago and, while he remains immune-system compromised, he’s really just like most other little boys, and this little boy asked us to help him bring a far away galaxy a little closer to home, with a Star Wars Room Makeover.
With the help of so many amazing and generous volunteers and donations, Room Makeover Day was the most awesome experience. While Dad Jim took the boys off for a few hours of exploration at the Science Centre, the makeover team got to work – IKEA building and installing the most amazing furniture, accessories and themed wall murals, SONY setting up a brand new laptop and printer and our very own volunteer character painter – who spent 2 long days and nights before makeover day painting a free-hand spaceship and Darth Vader character on the wall!
And speaking of Darth Vader – he along with 2 Stormtroopers – also made a guest appearance (courtesy of the 501st Legion) – welcoming Sean and his family home for the big reveal. Sean was so surprised to see Darth standing in the doorway that he just started to shake with excitement. The house was filled with friends and family, all wanting to be part of this amazing experience. And the room is spectacular – so awesome in fact that Sean’s little brother Ryan wants to move back in and share the room with him! May the Force be with them both!
